Seasonal Feeding Tips: How to Transition Livestock & Pets in Spring

As winter gives way to warmer days and greener pastures, your animals’ nutritional needs start to shift. Spring feeding is all about balance—supporting growth, boosting immunity, and easing the transition from cold-weather rations to fresh forage.

At Walker’s Feed and Farm Supply, we’re here to make that transition smooth and stress-free for your entire herd (and flock, and even your backyard pets). Here’s how to feed smarter this spring:

1. Don’t Rush the Green Grass

It’s tempting to turn animals out as soon as the pasture greens up—but new spring grass can be too rich at first, especially for horses, sheep, and goats. Introduce pasture slowly to avoid issues like colic or bloat.

Tip: Start with short grazing sessions and increase time over 1–2 weeks while continuing hay or dry forage.

2. Adjust Protein Levels

Warmer temperatures and increased activity mean animals may need more energy—but not always more protein. Overfeeding can lead to weight gain or metabolic issues, especially in mature horses or pets.

Our team can help you pick the right blend to match each animal’s life stage and workload.

3. Freshen Up Minerals & Supplements

Spring rains can wash minerals out of the soil and leave gaps in your animals’ diet. Salt blocks, loose minerals, and vitamin supplements can help fill in the gaps.

Look for:

  • High-magnesium mineral blocks for cattle

  • Poultry oyster shell & grit for egg production

  • Goat and sheep minerals that are copper-appropriate

4. Keep Water Clean & Flowing

As temps rise, water intake increases. Clean troughs and automatic waterers regularly to prevent algae buildup and bacteria. Consider adding electrolytes for animals under stress or in training.

5. For Pets & Backyard Animals

Dogs, barn cats, and even backyard bunnies benefit from a spring check-in. Watch weight gain, switch to lighter formulas if needed, and make sure flea/tick prevention is current.

Every season brings change, and we’re here to help you meet it head-on—with expert advice, trusted brands, and a hometown smile.

Swing by Walker’s and let us help you fine-tune your feed program this spring. Your animals will thank you!
